Waiting for motivation is a sure way to never take action. If we wait for motivation to find us, it will likely be a long wait.
Sure, there are days when we’re fired up, ready to lose those pounds this week!
But when they don’t come off immediately, we lose the desire to keep working towards our weight loss goal.
Motivation is elusive. It comes when we reach the point where staying where we are is more painful than the work it takes to reach our goal. And that feeling can change from day to day.
The truth is motivation comes from taking action, not the other way around. When you develop healthy habits and start to see results, whether it’s feeling better, having more energy, being more confident, or weight loss, that is the cycle that creates motivation.
Try these tips for weight loss motivation –
Set small goals, write them down, and keep them where you can see them. This ‘contract’ with yourself will incentivize you to achieve them. Setting small goals, and reaching them, builds confidence and trust with yourself. Especially if you’ve tried and failed at weight loss before. You may have a niggling conversation in the back of your head telling you that you won’t be able to do it. So, prove that voice wrong. Set small, achievable goals.
Know that you don’t have to give up the foods you love. Telling yourself you can’t have your favorite pizza or piece of cake, is setting yourself up for failure. You start to obsess over it. Then you come to the realization that you can’t resist forever so you throw in the towel altogether. Instead, understand there are foods you can eat more frequently and foods you can eat less frequently. Knowing you can eat your favorite foods will give you the motivation to stay the course.
Get a support system. Tell your friends you’re committed to losing weight. Making it official cements your goals. Ask friends to walk with you. Or make healthy meals together. Having support and being accountable increase your chances of success.
Get a coach. A coach will teach you what healthy food is and how much of it you should be eating. A coach will teach you what type and how much exercise you should be doing. And a coach is your number one supporter. Ready to cheer you on in your successes and help you trouble shoot and correct your path if you’re struggling.
You can lose weight. No matter how many times you’ve tried and failed before. You just need to know how to lose it and keep it off, by learning healthy eating, exercise and mindset for the long term.
